Safety and security in 1940’s as seen by sheikh sarwar
Men, women – old, young and children - every body could walk around, travel, day and night without any fear and without any weapon. Doors were kept open during the day.
Children going to and coming from school safe and sound.
A guard/chowkidar, government employee or a locally hired and funded, - all alone, with just a stick in hand would go around in the mohallah/locality shouting "jaagtay raho" means: keep awake, and some time he would knock at a wall with stick to tell of his presence. Wonderfully, bad man would avoid to step in the area in his presence. No doubt there was rule of PUNISHMENT and no one was above law.
What was behind this which is now - 2009 - missing.
There is Safety Police is seen on the streets on motor bikes and vehicles. Robberies and killing is widespread. People should also be vigilant. Should not leave their vehicles unlocked while unattended. Ladies should not show off their jewelry and encourage the bad people. Should not leave house unattended late night. If you have to leave the house, secure your valuables before leaving. Come back from hostelling and marriage parties as soon as possible. In the first instance we are ourselves supposed to take possible safety precautions.
Can we review our policies and make correction in ourselves? Do not harm/rob others and nobody would harm/rob us.
