Retainer: Services contracted on yearly basis:
1940's
Hair cuts / shaving / party catering at home.
There were salons working all seven days a week, but on holidays the job was done at client's place. I don't know - how many clients were served by one barber; and how they were paid. These same barber would cook meals on all occasions, parties for and at the client' place. They will deliver invitations to parties, or sad news to the client's listed friends and relatives locally or in other towns.
Cows/buffaloes or goats.
People used to keep cow or goats for fresh milk, butter, buttermilk. When cows were unable to give milk; they were taken to a village and handed over to a farmer to keep until she is able again to give milk. He was paid for this maintenance period. How much, I don't know.
GOATS- A person used to go around the basti and collect goats, took in the field to graze grass here there, and would bring them back to their owners in the afternoon. He was also paid monthly. How much, I don't know.
Washer-man/Dhobi. Laundry was done at home and spread in the sun. For a large or busy family, cloths were given to a washer man/dhobi paid monthly or by quantity/per hundred cloths.
Maintenance of Woodwork and Metalwork for farmers. It was done by carpenters and blacksmiths on a monthly/yearly basis. I think it was paid in cash and supply of food grains.
2009
A like system is seen. Some consultants are kept on a monthly payment. They are called to consult on matters. They need not attend offices daily. They are qualified persons in their fields.
