Marriage parties in India before its 1947 partition

Bridegroom and a child adorned as bridge groom (shavala) sat on horse back Music bands accompanied the marriage party while the party would walk if the bride's house was not far. For a distant place, everybody would go by horse-driven carriages. Meals and deserts were cooked afresh and served to the party. The bridegroom would return home with his bride. Coins were showered over the bridegroom and bride. Next day people will gather at bridegroom's house for meal and desert. The dowries/clothing and jewelry were shown in public. Some guests gave gifts - while other gave money to buy their own essentials, to bridegroom and the bride.

Guests used to sit on rug on both sides of a beautiful printed cloth about three feet wide spread on the rug. Person carrying water, an empty utensil for used water and a towel hanging from his shoulder, would ask every guest to wash hands. Meals included: Mutton pilaf, mutton curry, baked chicken, plain boiled rice, bread loaf, salad and a sweet dish, like sweet rice with almonds in it.

A water-container with soap and towel was placed for guests wash their hand and gargle after meals. Certainly, this arrangement was made separately for ladies also. Guests used ask for additional food, if they needed more than they were initially served. They were supposed to leave after meals but formally asked permission from the host, with thanks for the invitation and a prayer for the wellbeing and happy life of the married couple.
