Easy Installments

Easy Installments

Some time back Pakistan Television played “Bakra Kiston Par” a stage show that received a big applause. Bakra Kiston Par= Goat on installments. These plays project good and bad happenings that have taken place in the community. They keep us engaged by serving songs and sceneries yet revolving around the main message which is taken seriously by some and some of us let it go over the head.

For a long time well wishers (including some known politicians) in Pakistan, have been reminding us – time and again; to cut down on food menus for marriage parties. Though Money is No Problem for the well-to-do families, it always hurt people in the middle and third stage. Some have opted for early retirement from job to get money in lump sum to marry a daughter or son; some sold out their jewelry while some sold or pledged their property to invite guests at a better marriage hall and serve good palatable food. We have two faces, in all matters; one “YES we support the instructions laid out by administration and “NO” by looking out for invitation in a well set hall with different meals and desserts. We manipulate and find some ways to defy the “strict” “instructions” yet look obeying them:

§ Send meals to the girl’s house to serve their guests at their house and come to boy’s for solemnization and have a cup of tea.

§ Or divide guests in two. serve two dishes and a dessert and fruit to those who came with girl send them off and later throw another “wow” party to those on boy’s side; with BBQ’s plus couple of other dishes and drinks.

§ Extra over expense: You can omit music; music with dance, lights beyond need.

Restrictions imposed or self-adopted are good for people in countries where we see rich and poor apart. Let us take this a Will of God to see how rich facilitate their poor brothers and for the poor whether they are happy with Contentment. We should encourage those who cannot serve assorted meals and, at a rented hall; so that they do not have to undergo undue burden.

Catering on Installments

I have heard of some caterers offer to help those who could not set aside enough money to meet with catering expense for their beloved daughter or son’s marriage. But there is some thing on our own part to do. When we are blessed with children, we start thinking of their raising well, giving education, marrying them all of which need money but we, for reasons, have been unable to think and put in practice creating a Delayed Expense category. We should remain within resources and not expand on our avoidable needs. To borrow money to be repaid in monthly installments makes us suffer each month while our monetary needs increase to meet additional requirements with growing children. Avoid this cause of frustration, blood pressure and other sufferings in day to day life. We have to take this “Saving” bitter pill to keep painless future and uproot the cause of pain. Care is better than cure.

Saving: I remember a call given by a country’s administration chief to the public to donate a penny a person that will buy a Tank.

I will tell you my own stories of borrowing money:

I was a new employee in an organization. Our religious festival approached. People needed more money to celebrate and make children happy. My colleagues took advance from salaries. When I approached the director, Malik Sharif, he advised me not to dent my salary and avoid upsetting household monthly budget that may take longer to recover. I did not take advance and adjusted extra monetary needs in our rest-of-the-month expenses. My thanks to Mr. Malik.
My wife and I approached a relative (in a position to lend money) for a small size loan. Before the head of family (the earning person) could say anything; his wife (also my relative) asked “can you will pay back.

Zaroorat say ziada mehbani ho gaee hai

To goa khatam kia sari kahani ho gaee hai
Dararain bar rahin hein qurbaton mein rafta rafta
Hamari dosti sha-id purani ho gaee hai
Bina puchay mujhey phool bhajwaen hein us-ney
Usay meri tarf say badgumani ho gaee hai
Bahut darbarion men ghir ga-ein hein zille-Ilahi
So ab mashkook ujki hukam-rani ho gaee hai
Wo sab se ziada zarf ka charcha karey gi
Wo larki jo achanak khandani ho gaee hai
Kamal-e zarf-e giria ki sanad hasil thi ji ko
Suna hai ab wo pathar aankh pani ho gaee hai
Usay mujh say shika-et thi mujhey usay gila tha
Zara si baat barh kar daastan ho gaee hai
Mohabbat Mir o Ghalib tak to lafani thi Roohi
Magar ye ham tak aatay aatay fani ho gaee hai

Zamaney ke sawalon ko mein hans kar taal deta hoon

ye kis maqam par hayat mujh to le ke aa-gaei
na bas pe yahan, na gam pe ikhtiar hai
tamam umar ke hisaab mangti hai zindgi
ye mera dil kehay to kia, ye khud se sharamsaar hai
bula raha kaon mujh ko chilmano ki us tarf
meray liay bhi kia koi udaas begarar hai

Yoon zidgi ki rah mein takra gia koee
Ik roshni andheron mein bikhra gia koee
Wo haadsa wo pehli mulaqaat kia kahoon
Kitni ajeeb thi wo soorat-e halaat kia kaoon
Wo qehr wo gazab wo jafa mujh ko yaad hai
Wo uski be-rukhi ki ada much ko yaad hai
Mit-ta nahin hai zehan say yoon chha gia koee
Pehlay mujhey wo dekh ke barham si ho gaee
Phir apnay hi haseen khyalon mein kho gaee
Be-chargi pe meri usay rehm aa gia
Sha-id meray tarapnay ka andaaz bha gia
Sansoon say bhi qareeb meray aa gia koee
Yun us nay piar say meri bahon ko chhu lia
Ik pal mein dil pe kaisi qiamat guzar gaee
Rag rag mein uskay husn ki khushboo bikhar gaee
Zulfon meray shanon pe lehra gia koee
An us dil-e tabah ki halat no poochiay
Be-naam arzoo ki lazzat no poochiay
Ik ajnabi tha ruh ka arman ban gia
Ik haadsah than piar ka unwan ban gia
Manzil ka raasta mujhay dikhla gia koee

Ye Batain jhoti batain hein ye logon ne phelaeen hein

Hein aur bhi wajhein vehshat ki insaan ko rakhti dukhiara
wo bekal bekal rehta hai jis ne preet mein dil hara
varna shaam se subhe tak yoon kon phiray hai awara

jo jaan liay tal na sakay ye aisi bhi uftaad nahin
ye baat to tum bhi mano gay wo Qais nahin Firhad nahin
kya ishq ka daru mushkil hai, kia wasal kay nuskhay yaad nahin
ham say kaho ham karten hein, kia Insha ko samjhana hai
us larki se bhi keh lein gay, go ye aur zamana hai
ya chorain ya takmeel karein, ye ishq ye ya afsana hain

Taza hawa ke shauq mein aye saaknan-e shehr
Itney na dar banana ke dewar gir parey
Teer kha ke jo dekha kameen gha ki tarf
Apney hi doston se mulakaat ho geiy

Teri berukhi ne chheen leen hein shararten meri
og smjhte hein, men sudhar gia hoon

Tha zam jinhein wo darya bhi tujhi mein dhoobay
To ke sehra nazar ata tha, samandar nikla
Thakey harey parindon ne mujhko naseehat ki
Shaam dhal ja-ay to Mohsin tum bhi ghar jaya karo

Ye daria raat bhar charta raha hai
Suna raat bhar barsa hai badal
Magar wo shehr jo pyasa raha hai
Wo koi dost tha achhe dinon ka
Jo pichhli raat se yaad aa raha hai
Kisay dhoondo gay in galion mein Nasir
Chalo ab ghar chalo din dhal raha hai

Tujh ko ma’loom nahin tunjh ko bhala kia maloom
Teray chehray ke ye saada say naqoosh
Meray takhayyal ko kia rang ata kartay hein
Tujh ko ma’loom nahin --------
Teri zulfen teri aankhen teray aariz teray hoont
Kaisi anjaan maasoom si khata kartay hein
Tujh ko ma’loom nahin -------
Khilwat-i-bazam ho khilwat-i-tanhaaee
Tera paikar meri nazron mein ubhar aata hai
Koi saath ho koi fikr ho koi mahaul
Mujh ko har simt tera husn nazar aata hai
Chalte chalet jo qadam aap thakh jaatain hain
Sochta hoon kahin tu ne pukara to nahin
Gum si ho jati hain nazaren to khyal aata hai
Is min pinhan teri aankhon ko ishara to nahin
Tujh ko ma’loom -------
Dhoop mein saya bhi hota hai gurezan jis dam
Teri zulfain meray shaanon pe bikhar jati hein
Takh ke jab sar kisi pathar pe tika deta hoon
Teri bahain meri garden mein utar aati hein
Tujh ko ma’loom -----

Sar-i-baaleen koi betha hai baray piyar ke saath
Meray bikhray huay uljhay huay balon mein koee

Mein naseeb hoon kisi aur ka, mujhe mangta koi aur hai

Ek do roz ka sadma ho to ro lein Fakhir
Ham kohar roz ke sadmaat ne rone na dia

Harfe sa'da jisse samjhi thi, paheli nikli
meri dushman mere bachpan ki saheli nikli
masla kaon sa tha, kao se majbouri thi
bhai nethey the, behn ghar se akeli nikli
bichrey logon ko achanak meri yaad aney lagi
jab mere naam bazurgon ki haweli nkli
yaa uski masalsal satati rehi
raat bhar men ghazal gungunati rehi
is tarha zabt ko aazmati rehi
zakhm khati reh, muskarati rehi

Hota nahin hai khatm Qateel aas ka safar
Paoon katey huay hein magar chal rehay hein log

Hum kuch kehtey hein to wo kehtey hein bahut boltey ho
Chup rehtey hein to wo poochtey hein naraaz lagtey ho
Apney dil ki baat unhein kaisey samjaen
Izhar karte hein to wo kehtey hein mazaq kartey ho

Haath chhotay bhi to rishtay nahin choota kartay
Waqt ki shaakh say lamhay nahin tora kartay
Jis kay mathay pay ho silvat nigahon mein shikn ho
Aisi tasveer kay tukray nahim jora kartay
Shehd jeenay ka mila karta hai thora thora
Janay walon kay liay dil nahin tora kartay
Lag kay sahil say jo behta hai usay behnay do
Aisay darya ka kabhi rukh nahin mora targa

Har koi phirta hai hathalee pe sehra rakhay
Kis ko serab karey kis ko pyasa rakhay
Umar bhar koi nabhata ta’aluq itna
ae meri jan ke dushman tujhe Allah rakhay
Ham ko achha nahin lagta koi hamnam tera
Koi tujh sa ho to rakhay bhi naam tera
Dil bhi kitna pagal hai ke usi shaksh se wabasta hei
Jo kisi aur honay de na apna rakhay
Ye inayat hai atayat hai ke chahat hai Faraz
Ham to raazi hein tu jis haal mein jaisa rakhay

Gali mein dard ke purzey talash karti thi
Meray khaton ke turkey talash karti thi
Bhula-e kon azzyat-prastian uski
Khushi ke shehr mein sadmey talash karti thi
Ajeeb mehr prasti thi uski fitrat mein
Shajar ke tootey pattey talash karti thi
Qyam karti thi mujh mein so’obton ki tarah
Udas rooh ke goshey talash karti thi
Tamam raat vo pardah hata ke chand ke saath
Jo khoey ga-ey they vo lamhey talash karti thi
Kuchh is liay bhi meray ghar se usko this wehshat
Yahan bhi apney piarey hi talash karti thi
Ghuma phira kar juda-ee ki baat karti thi
Hamesha hijr ke harbey talash karti thi
Dua-ein karti thi ujrey hu-ey mazaron par
Barey ajeeb saharey talash karti thi
Mujhey to aaj bataya hai baadlon ne Vasi
Vo laut aaney ke rustey talash karti thi

Gam baray aate hein qatil ki nigahon ki tarah
Tum chupa lo mujhe ae dost gunahon ki tarah
Apni nazron mein gunehgar no hote keonkar
Dil hi dushman hei mukhalif ke gawahon ki tarah
Har tarf zeest ki rahon mein kari dhoop hai dost
Bas teri yaad ke sae hein panahon ki tarah
Jin ki khatir kabhi ilzaam uthaya tha Fakhir
Wo bhi paish ayen hein insaaf ke shahon ki tarah

Gaey dinon ka surag lekar kidhar se aya kidhar gia wo
Ajeeb manoos ajnabi tha mujhey to hairan kar gia wo
Wo maikadhay ko jaganay wala, wo raat ki need uranay wala
Ye aaj kia uskay ji mein a-ee ke shaam hotay hi ghar gia wo
Na ab wo yadoon ka charta darya, no fursaton ki udaas barkha
Yunhi zara si kask hai dil men jo zakham gehra tha bhar gia wo
Wo jis ke shanay pe haath rakh kar safar kia tha tu nay mansloon ka
Teri gali say na janey keon aaj sar jhuka ke guzar gia wo
Wo raat ka be-nava musafir, wo tera sha-ir wo tera Nasir
Teri gali tak to ham ne dekha, phir na janay kidhar gia wo

Daag hai mujh pe ishq ka, mera gunah bhi dekh
uski nigah bhi to dekh, jis ne ye gul khila dia

Daikhney mein seedhey saadey bholey bhaley hein
Ye hazrat kaon si basti key ya-Rab rehney waley hein

Dil ke a-eenay mein hai tasveer-i-yar
Jab zara garden jhukaee dekh lee

Dil ki basti purani dillhi hai
Jo bi guzra, usnay loota hai

Dil tha ik shola, magar beet ga-ey din vo Qateel
ab koredo na issay, rrakh men kia rakha hai

Dilon kay fasley bartay rahen gay
Jahan tak mashware baham na hongay

Dhoop mein niklo, ghataon mein naha kar dekho
Zindgi kia hai, kitabon ko hata kar dekho
Vo sitara hai chamaknay do usay ankhon mein
Kia zaroori hai usay jism bana kar dekho
Pathron ki bhi zaban hoti hai dil hotay hain
Apnay ghar kay dar-o-diwaar saja kar dekho
Faasla nazar ka dhoka bhi to ho sakta hai
Vo milay ya na-milay haath barah kar dekho

Dil ki basti ajeeb bati hai
lootnay walay ko tarasti hai
Ho qanayat jo zidgi ka asool
Tang-dasti farakh-dasti hai
Azil say dil hai jahan mein kamyaab
Phir bhi yay shay gazab ki sasti hai
Ham fana ho kay bhi fana na huay
Ne-hasti ik tarah ki hasti hai
Aankh ko kia nazar nahin aata?
Abar ki tarah say barasti hai

Chhup ke usney jalaya tha mera khat
Raakh kaisay sarey shehr mein phail ga-ee

Chhoti si galat fehmi kar de gi juda hamko
Hallat na badlein ge maloom na tha ham ko
Rishton ki hamein itni pehchan na thi pehle
Kehney ko marasam to apney they bahut gehre
Ashkon ke siwa lekin khuch bhi na kila hamko
Uth-te huey qadmon mein zanjir si parh jati

Bus gay-ee hai meray ehsas mein ye kaisi khushbu
Koi khushbu mein lagaoon teri khushbu a-ay

Baat niklay gi to phir door talak ja-ay gi

Ye bhi puchhain gay ke tum itni pareshan keon ho
Choorion par bhi ka-ee tanz kassay ja-ein gay
Kaanptay hathoon par fiqray bhi kassay ja-ein gay
Log zalim hein har baat ka ta’na dein gay
Baton baton mein mera zikr bhi le a-ein gay

Ab zehn mein nahin hai par naam tha bhala sa

Abhi abhi jo chale gae mun mor ke rukh mor ke
Wo marey hi shehr ke log they, mere ghar se ghar tha mila hua

Warna aandhi me dya kis ne jalaya hoga!

Aankhon mein raha dil mein utar kar nahin dekha
Kashti kay musafir nay samandar nahin dekha

Ab men ration ki qitaron main nazar ata hun

Ab to ghabra kay wo kehtey hain ke mar jaen gay
Mar kay bhi chain na paya to kidher jaen gay

Abhi kamsun ho nadaan ho, kahin kho do gay dil mera
Tumharey hi liay rakha hai le laina jawan ho kar

Achhay lagtay hein ghar kay puranay bartan
Chhat tapakti hai to keechar nahin honay detay

Haan, jaisa hamara khawb tha, waisa nahin hai wo

Apne bhi khafa muj se begane bhi na-khush

Tum ne mandar dekhay hon-gay, ye mera aangan hai
Ik dia bhi jalta rakhna kitna mushkil hai
Chullu mein ho dard ka darya, dhiyan mein uskay hoont

In memory of my wife Sarfraz Sarwar

khud ko chuntey huey din sara guzar jata hai 'Fraaz
phir hawa shaam ki chalti hai to bikhar jata hun mein

It has been difficult for me to forget you for a moment. Try to keep myself busy in office and at home. When I am alone at night I spread sheet of your memories over me and travel with you so long as the dark doesn't expose me.

Your loving Sarwar

Life

LIFE

Life is a state of living between birth and death and marriage is a sanctity; holiness of life and character. It’s a one-time show. Stage is already set. Play a good character so people remember you here and rewards await you hereafter.

Life starts long time before your see it – in the shape of a very small male sex cell (a seed) which fertilizes a women’s ova (egg) to make a baby. Going through a process of life start taking shapes, then a baby full of father and mother’s love show up in our new world.

In our daily life we see fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers are seeded in the soil. They take time to fertilize and then we see their growth pointing out of soil slowly, until they stand up strong to bear its produce.

Animals, birds, mammals, insects and underground, under water, wherever they are, they go through same natural process to come to life.

Here, i will be expressing my own feelings about human life. The Creater has numerous creature, He could send us in the lap of some one else. I am thankful to Him having blessed us with a very beautiful life.

We should therefore be thankful to:

God – the Power – the Creator – who chose our body and soul to live in human life in the world. We should obey Him, follow His instructions and Messages sent through His Messengers. Always seek His guidance in ALL matters and ask for forgiveness for wrongdoings; sooner the better and without shame; again and again; He listens and grants.

Our father and mother who infused in us their love and affection and stayed with us through thick and thin from lap to adulthood. They fed us, help us crawl, walk, talk; put us in school; tried to educate us so are able to spend a social life and be able to give them their grand children they start waiting from the day they marry their children. They preplan lot of celebration. You will observe their longing desire for your kids. They will give them love more than you. You are noble you will teach them how to become noble and respectable.

Life is fanciful, charming and respectful but not a bed of roses.
We are ignorant how our parents grew up and how they struggled to live a life. By our adulthood we have gone through some odds and evens that passed through. Somewhere we struggled ourselves and some time our parents and friends helped us. There are odds in the complex and diverse society that you have to tackle wisely. Your determination will strengthen you to overcome those. As we become more and more social and move around in the society, get education, we find world an endless source of beauty and joy.

Arranged Married life and society life:
It needs two to claps; two wings to fly; two wheels of a cart.
Sooner or later you have to marry so you have a place in society. Bachelors are not welcome in families get together; birthday or marriage parties. The most honorable kind of marriage is arranged marriage between two families in relation; or otherwise but both parents get their children in this sacred bond. God forbid, if there are some differences between the couple; parents can sit and sort out. There will lot of cousins on both sides to see the couple happy.

Dating ----destined ---- to a failed marriage:
If things go out of gear and there is likeliness between two odds; one sided or otherwise; it is almost difficult to judge each other for a life long partnership. Face is said to be index of mind but how about controlled facial outlook. The person who often frequently changes dates and venues and looks on sides haphazardly while talking and forgets the point under discussion is dodging and not at all sincere. You will also hear such words “my mother is ALMOST ready to go any day to meet with your parents; be patient for few more days; every thing will settle down”. He will give you ride in a borrowed car; a fancy taxi. Don’t go after these fake show-offs. If that person was so much rich, respectful and loved one of parents and liked by relatives, why he/she was not proposed for marriage. It is not true that “I do not like them, I don’t find any body among them to be my life partner”. These are not the essentials for the marriage. We should be honest to God, to ourselves. Try to escape before your are trapped.

An Urdu poetry verse: (excuse me for mistake in translation)
Vo parindah jissey parvaaz se fursat hi na thi
Ab tanha hai to dewaar pe a betha hai

(the bird who had not a free moment from his flight with other birds, is now left alone by all, has come back and is seen on “my house” wall)

Adulteration:
I believe all faiths have rejected “adulteration” be it in food products, in human relations or in measurement. There have been cases where an affair of a partner leaked out for a previous continuing affair or even having been married before: at that point you will hear such words “dear, I am sorry, I wanted to tell you several times but each time we were dragged away in sightseeing or tea-talks”. “That marriage was forced on me by my parents; she is illiterate, a village girl, cannot move in society. I was a girl who is educated and social”. That would be a blind turn; totally dark. Nobody would be able to remove odds. Who can put two swords in the same case!
Ask some one else, if I am correct. There are those who have a wife and children in their country, and “secretly” keep another wife in a third country and are living a happily here and there also.

We reject any adulteration in good stuff – isn’t it! How we compromise with adulteration in this pure relation in life. Pass on purity to siblings.

Some time the two flirting each and out of lust or fearing from a forced separation after a leak of their friendship, resort to a court marriage; with fake witnesses. Believe it or not they have disrespected themselves and downgraded their parents in relative and society; like they were poisoned to death by their own children. If you approach your parents asking for forgiveness and acceptance of your marriage; you cannot think of options with your wounded parents; they are died before their death and what dead man can do except to accept your proposal “with a hope for this to become a good arrangement”; “It would be as you can pull the dead man’s thumb, ink it and mark on the transfer of property form”.

It would have been advisable and advisable it is to bring your initial liking to the notice of your parents who would through their own sources get necessary information of each side to see if most of those findings are matching on both sides and arrange their marriage and save them going astray. Some odds and differences can be discussed and solved.

Take benefit of parents’ experience in life:
Our parents have gone through ups and down in life and gained experience. They are the best and nearest available guides to take advantage of. Talk to your mother, father about the problem you are confronted with or you foresee a hurdle. I am sure they will give you a better solution. Follow it. Don’t think (maybe; maybe not) about it’s being workable. A shaky step can mislead you and throw you at a distant place. Take it for sure, this is the first and foremost living source of good advice. Speak out to them your problem, your fears, whatever they are.

Society (Zamana “in urdu”) is also a good teacher: You learn a lot about living a good life in school where you meet with good and bad children. Their behaviors will show you different between the two. Teachers, who have dealt with students from complex communities, can also give an advice on social problems. When you are confused and unable to take a decision, society will roll you left and right to adjust yourself.

Status symbols of the day

Status is a “scale” of “social” standing; and not a scale of our own making.

1960’s:
Couple of friendly families were on an evening walk when someone put a question to my wife:
Q: Do you own a dog
A: No
The questioner lady said “don’t you know keeping a dog with is status-symbol of the day and if you walk her with you, your status would speak for itself”.

1980’s:
Another group under some complex were telling their children to be proud of their father being PhD / MSc; hen people ask "you are son of whom" tell me Mr. so and so, PhD or MSc. when people will know of your father’s status, they will respect you.

1940’s:
Days have gone when this feed was not injected and the communities composed of various sects shared their happiness and grief and elders and children were known and respected by each other. Children didn’t know much who is their relative and who is not. They were all children, uncles and cousins.

1990’s:
The generation which is now fading out has shattered the families golden web woven over a period of time and has seeded a sour plant to keep every body at distance. History will tell them they had fallen in trap of an inferiority complex and had taken a wrong decision.Make others your good friends above all complexes. They will walk in need shoulder to shoulder with you. Make friendship at par; no over-expectations from each other. No over-expectations within your own family!Izzo man Tasha-O, wa Zillo man Tasha-O. The dignity, grace and disgrace are all in the hands of God. He scales our noble deeds and the bad ones to base grace and disgrace. So, we should try to win the likeliness of God and not the people.

Children from parents who were less privileged and with no/or little education, rose to be the president of country, ragional managers of big corporation, owner of large industrial. estates. Among others, in Pakistan, Imdad International, Batala Engineering, Allama Iqbal son of a petty trader.

People will respect you:
If you give due respect to your family members.
Greet others and be respectful to them.
Keep in contact with your neighbors; be with them in sweet and sour.
If you find anyone in need, extend possible help.
Speak comfortably.Avoid harsh talk and confrontation.
If your communication has hurt anyone, apologize for that.
Keep your surroundings neat and clean.
Avoid loudness late evenings.
If you arrange any party in your house late evenings (usually it should be before 10); check with your neighbors around; if that should not disturb them.

How to Make Indenting or Hanging lines in Word document

How to Make Indenting or Hanging lines in Word document

When we start a new Word document or open a saved document, we see shaded areas in the top and left rulers. That show present top and left margins of that document text. There are controls to readjust and make new margins of paragraphs and lines as explained below:

The shape appearing here is a skeleton of what we see in the upper ruler in Word document.

Click in a line of paragraph that you want to move in minus-margin/hanging indent. Then move the upper triangle to the left of paragraph as much as you want to make the line indented to the left of following lines. Likewise, if you want to move the first line in paragraph to the right/indent, move the upper triangle to release wherever you wanted it to show. Other lines will keep their margin.

If you want to let stay first line on same margin as the whole paragraph but move the line/s below to the right, click in the second line and move the lower triangle to the right as much as you want to leave distance to the left below upper line. All remaining lines will move.

If you want to move the whole paragraph to the left or right, click in the box below triangles and move left or right and release where you wanted paragraph to be margined.

There is a triangle (pointing up) in the upper ruler of document. Moving that to the left or right should move and readjust right margin of paragraph or rather the whole document.

Note: please correct me where I am wrong to redo my post. Thanks.

Dowry in Islam

Demand and Supply of DOWRY though not accepted to “have been asked for” and “doing on their own”, is seen in practice in all cultures. We are members of the same family, at large and should know status (monetarily) of our other member brothers. We overlook that in quest of fulfilling our own demands. We are so wise and are proud of judging the other person just in one meeting; by dress, by spoken words but where Dowry is in view we focus our thinking on Demand and Supply only.

If we put ourselves in the other’s person’s position, we will feel as if we were the unprivileged ones that are not in a position to afford Dowry. I have seen people withdrawing service pension collectively in advance to comply with the demand and some putting them in a very sorrowful position by asking for a loan. Where there are more than one girl to marry – we can well imagine their position. Some people say “we don’t any dowry; if you want to give that you will give to your daughter” – Is this a quiet demand!

Let’s all pray that Allah the most Kind flush out this evil from our hearts and provide family atmosphere and affection to other girl and her parents. Sure with usual customary gifts both parents’ on occasions and events, the new family house will flourish. By Allah’s blessings, there have been such instances in reality and families live in happiness and prosperity.

While searching for more knowledge on this subject, I came across a very informative writing by Amatullah Abdullah (amatullah11@gmail.com) which is reproduced below:

DOWRY IN ISLAM?!

A woman holds a very high status in Islamic faith. She is honoured and respected at all times, but many startling transgressions have crept into Islamic practice. These transgressions have been caused by cultural influence that has no basis in Islamic scripture.
Muslims living in the Indian subcontinent have slowly incorporated the act of dowry into their lives. Dowry originated in the upper caste Hindu communities as a wedding gift (cash or valuables) from the bride's family to the groom's family. There is nothing strange or unique about a culture influencing Muslim practice, as it is a common characteristic around the globe that when a new religion spreads in an area, people who live in that area retain some of the customs and traditions which they have been practicing for centuries. There is nothing wrong with this as long as those practices do not contradict Islamic law. The practice of dowry, however, does in fact transgress Islamic law.
We usually use the word gift for something, which we give voluntarily, to a person we like. A gift is something that strengthens the friendship bond between two people. Dowry, which is usually defined as a “gift” given along with the bride, by a bride’s family to the bridegroom, is used as tool of coercion and greed in societies like India. The bride’s family must give this “gift” or the marriage will not take place. Always the price of the dowry is set higher than the bride’s family can afford and sadly, this results in the bride becoming a burden on her family. The bride’s family then struggles to pay the “gift”.
In Islam it is the the man who pays Mahr(dower) to the woman . The following verses in the Qur’an proves that it is the man who is obligated to pay the Mahr (dower) to the woman unless the woman chooses not to take it.
"And give women (on marriage) their dower (Mahr) as a free gift; but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, take it and enjoy it with right good cheer." (Al-Qur'an : Al-Nisa' :4)
Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess: Thus hath Allah ordained (Prohibitions) against you: Except for these, all others are lawful, provided ye seek (them in marriage) with Mahr ( dower, a bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) from your property,- desiring chastity, not lust, seeing that ye derive benefit from them, give them their dowers (at least) as prescribed; but if, after a dower is prescribed, agree Mutually (to vary it), there is no blame on you, and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise. (Al-Qur'an :Al-Nisa' :24)
Cultures that demands dowry from the bride’s family, are actually practicing the opposite of what Allah commanded. They have reversed Allah’s words in their practice. The bride is forced to pay a negotiated amount to the groom unless the man chooses not to take it.
When the woman brings less than the negotiated amount, she has to endure constant torture from her in-laws after marriage. When the husband or in-laws are not satisfied with the dowry brought by the bride, they even go to the extent of killing the woman after marriage. The most severe among all the dowry abuse is “bride burning”. The parties engaged in the murder usually report the case as an accident or suicide.
While dowry abuse is most common among Hindus, it is rising among Muslims too. Dowry abuse is rising in the Indian Sub continent despite a Dowry Prohibition Act being passed in 1961. The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports 6,285 dowry deaths in 2003. The official records are always under reported. It is obvious that this crime is under reported, for e.g.: In Delhi 90% of cases of woman being burnt are recorded as accidents, five percent as suicides and only the remaining five percent were shown as murder. The statistics of dowry deaths in whole of India is spine chilling.
Many women remain unmarried due to this dowry. Even worse is that, when Muslim men who intend on honoring the Mahr(dower) to the bride, the bride rejects them. The women prefer to remain unmarried rather marrying some one who is not from their culture.
Another practice is that people tend to exchange their sons. In other words, they give a bridegroom (mostly their son) to a girl to be married in exchange for a bridegroom from girl’s family (the bride-to-be’s brother or any unmarried male relative) so that they can have their daughters married without dowry. This places an incredible disadvantage on the parents who have daughters and no sons. The parents of daughters end up giving money to get their daughters married!
It is a sad irony that women (mostly mothers-in-law) end up being the ones who direct oppressive attitudes toward other women (daughters- in-law). Mostly, mothers-in-law-to- be are the ones who demand dowry from the bride’s family and who end up torturing the daughter-in-law after marriage if she brings less than the negotiated amount.
Syed (35 from Chennai, India) says, “It is difficult to find a bride who would be able afford all that my mom asks…because of this I am still unmarried”.
When I asked his mother why she is demanding a dowry from the bride, she said, “We have spent so much on our son, for his education, for raising him and now we will marry him off and most of the money he earns will go to his wife. So she will be benefited from all the money we spent on him. For that they can pay some amount to have our son.”
Ahmed (29 from Delhi, India) says” I don’t want to take any dowry but can’t stop my parents from asking as I will disrespect them if I do so.”
So in an effort to respect parents and to conform to cultural norms, Muslim youth in India are bending over backwards to follow traditions that aren’t even rooted in Islam. Demanding dowry and getting married may seem valid in the eyes of many, but will the marriage be validated in the eyes of Allah ?
Dowry is purely a matter of culture. One should not feel obliged to continue these unIslamic traditions. If a culture contains unIslamic aspects, then one should not feel any shame to break the culture’s traditional practices.
The practice of dowry has caused Muslims in many parts of the world to continue their prejudices against women despite the Islamic prohibitions against it. In the Indian subcontinent, a woman is considered to be a great burden mainly because of the dowry system. Here, it is common to see people rejoicing over the birth of a son and lamenting over the birth of daughter. In India, the reason why people prefer male children over female children is mainly due to cultural practices such as dowry. Why aren’t people listening to the message of Islam instead of following the customs of others around them?
Allah has given us warning of this in the Qur’an. Allah tells us that infanticide is a grave sin and that favor of one gender over the other has no grounds in Islam.
When news is brought to one of them, of (the Birth of) a female (child), his face darkens and he is filled with inward grief! With shame does he hide himself from his people because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain her on (sufferance) and contempt, or bury her in the dust? Ah! What an evil (choice) they decide on? (Al-Qur'an: An Nahl: 58-59).
As Muslims, we should consider, the birth of daughters to be a great blessing. In addition to the Qur’an, the Hadiths also carry the message to value women.
Malik reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He, who brought up two girls properly till they grew up, he and I would come (together) (very closely) on the Day of Resurrection, and he interlaced his fingers (for explaining the point of nearness between him and that person). [Sahih Muslim: Book 032, Number 6364].
Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) A lady along with her two daughters came to me asking me (for some alms), but she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet came in and I informed him about this story. He said, "Whoever is in charge of (put to test by) these daughters and treats them generously, then they will act as a shield for him from the (Hell) Fire." [Sahih Bukhari :Volume 8, Book 73, Number 24].
It is so unfortunate to see the people submitting themselves to the dictates of culture than to the will of Allah who is our Creator, Cherisher and the Sustainer.
Islam stresses fairness and kindness. Islam ensures that boys and girls are treated equally. Discrimination between children because of their gender is not advocated in Islam.
Narrated Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas: I was stricken by an ailment that led me to the verge of death. The Prophet came to pay me a visit. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have much property and no heir except my single daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my property in charity?" He said, "No." I said, "Half of it?" He said, "No." I said, "One-third of it?" He said, "You may do so) though one-third is also to a much, for it is better for you to leave your off-spring wealthy than to leave them poor, asking others for help. [Sahih Bukhari : Volume 8, Book 80, Number 725].
Let us not succumb to the fitanh caused by culture and let us stand firm in practicing Islam by enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong!

Let there arise out of you
A band of people
Inviting to all that is good,
Enjoining what is right,
And forbidding what is wrong:
They are the ones
To attain felicity.'
(Al-Qur'an :Aal-e-Imran : 104)

Friendship of Boys & Girls of 1940-2009

Friendship of Boys & Girls - written by Sheikh Sarwar

1940’s

All children: boys and girls all together used to come out and play at sunset for an hour or two. Parents were watching children and exchanging greetings and discussing matters of mutual interest of residents.

"My boy friend" "My girl friend" were not phrased by then. It is now common in children and grown ups; married or unmarried.

1960’s

This concept of boy friend and girl friend crept in when communities were mixed up in the new environment by migrating after creation of Pakistan. A poet writing his work in Punjabi language – Ustad Daman – was often invited by colleges and in other gathering of poets. He was invited in a college. He expressed his observation of this friendship in his work as follows:

“Aithay har munday naal ik kuri hai; jenwein aljebray naal geometry hai”
(Here every girl has a boy with her and every boy has a girl with him”

1980-2009

This concept got a big pat and tame worldwide and encouraged to “play safe”. Safety products made available without restriction of gender and age. Now the affair stays between the two. Positive results are taken care of by some institutions. Although matters are cleared but the gilt stays there. Parents know or don’t step into the personal affairs of children. Because both sides have become choosey, they can switch partners before and after marriage very frankly and open-mindedly. Children and adults don’t mind mixing up with others irrespective of different nationalities. This has given birth to divorces and remarriages.

Things now look at their height. Let us hope they will step down to an honorable place again for the future generations!

You are encouraged to correct me wherever you feel I need it. Thanks.

Contentment

Contentment:
Satisfaction with one's possessions, status, or situation)

vernacular=Punjabi:
Na dekh paraee chopri, na tarsa ji
Rukhi-sukhi kha te thanda pani pi –
Means “Stay within your means”, “Don’t look others what they do”, and be happy)

After my high school I joined my first job in 1950 as a junior clerk/typist at a salary grade of 60-4-100-5?-120 (means 4 rupees annual increment and on reaching 100, the annual raise will be increased and finally you come to the maximum). Plus, I was getting a special typing allowance of Pakistan Rupees 20/per month. I lived as bachelor, spent some money on my own. On each payday I used to come home (1-way 4 hours bus travel) and give the balance money to my mother. She was happy and used to pray for more and more Blessings from God. She was also doing some stitching work for charge. She looked after us (two sons and three daughters – all in middle and high school). By the Grace of God she managed the household very well.

Now that we have our own families, I am still practicing Contentment that she taught us and enjoying Blessings of God. I am a muslim and Contentment is one of our religious teachings also.

I was doing job at a project in District Hazara, Pakistan. Our department head (a Swiss) took us to on an excursion trip in the mountains. He found and explained us an inscription preaching “Contentment by “Budha” in sunsikrat language that he could read.

I am still in service (4/2009) and paid less than my contemporaries. However, with adoption of contentment and with Blessings of God, we are completely satisfied.

All this is not of our own making, we are greedy and always look for more and more. We must ask the Provider to grant His blessings in whatever he is providing us so we remain satisfied at all times.

sheikhmsarwar@gmail.com

Commitment

I have concluded from our dealings with each other in daily life that we take Commitment very lightly or even ignore it. If I am not wrong this is another king of Promise/Wa'da.
Panjab Sufi Poet Baba Bhullay Shah expressed obligation of fulfilling a promise in his following words:
Wa'da karna te kar chhad dena, yaad rakh ai kam insaan da na'in
Bhulay Shah na aadmi samj uhnu jera aadmi pura zaban da na'in
(meaning something like this: This is not becoming of a human to promise and not to fulfill it; rather such a person does not deserve to be called a human being)

Commitment that we make must be fulfilled. This is what I have observed being fulfilled and have also experienced difficulties in not fulfilling it.

Commitment is conveyed by one or all of the following actions:
- in spoken words
- by nodding which gives positive indication
- just saying, don’t worry, I will see to it
- saying; why you worry, I am here
- yes, will do it Insha Allah (God willing)

Here, I must remind Muslim brothers of the instruction I have heard of:“Ma t’qulu, ma la taf-olun”(why you say that, what you cannot or will not do)

Please, do not:linger on unnecessarily.
- tell the person if you need more time to accomplish this
- tell him, frankly, as soon as possible, that you tried but were not successful and he should ask someone for help.

I am sure he is worried (as I am in such circumstances) and his time is as precious as our.

Treat and Behave others as we want ourselves to be behaved.

Sarfraz Anjum, my wife and myself

Sarfraz proved to be a good daughterinlaw, wife, mother and sisterinlaw; she respected family, relatives and neighor and was also so respected by them. She left me for her permanent abode on January 20, 2008. May Allah be happy with her and keep her in peace.

Here are photographs my wife Sarfraz Anjum and myself.
This is me. My father like every father, must have thought of me to become so and so??, but he left us too early without seeing his dreams and thoughts becoming true. He was raising us very nice with love and guidance.
However, as I said my mother, after my father, raised us; loved us and taught ethics. I will always regret I have had but a very little chance to serve her. My job has always been out of home town; Lahore. Closer to your family you are, closer you feel feelings of motherhood and brother and sisters. They never complained of my distance; because we/I needed a job to make some money for household expense.

The shock my mother had to bear that she engaged me to a girl by name Sarwar but this engagement broke down; my apologies for this unexpected unintentional; shock she had to face.. God had thought otherwise and my apologies to my father who would not have expected this of me. and as saying goes "the marriage partners are selected in the heaven", circumstances pushed me to that direction and I was married to Sarfraz Anjum. I am sure whatever is to take place is pre-planned by God and circumstances keep changing to reach that point.

Basti Danishmandan, birth place of Sheikh Sarwar

I love that. I had just done my middle at Sanatan Dharam high school, Basti Nau, Jalandhar and gone for the 9th in Islamia High School, Basti Mithu Sahib. Whatever I could remember, that is a treasure. I will love to visit my place again if God approves and permits someone to help me perform it.

Our House in Basti Danishmandan - Jalandhar (India) had two portions with an open courtyard (sehan) in between. There was a water well and large tall NEEM tree in the center. Leaves of this tree when dry, were used to put in dress and fabric boxes to keep insects away and were also used to make their powder and swallow to purify blood. I believe the present day medicine for this purpose is called "Saafi". People also collected these leaves from our house for their above purposes. This tree had a small fruit; sour when green and sweet when rippened. We used to eat lot of this to avoid pimples on our skin. You could also boil these leaves and wash affected skin to disinfect.

We had swings hanging from the tree. There was a big honeybeehive (of big bees) on the tree about 4 feet long and 1-2/2 feet wide. Another behive (of small bees) was on a wall near well.We used to squeez honey every year from these resources.

We had always had a cow for fresh milk, butter, buttermilk (lassi). Sometime lassi was saved and shared with other residents to cook a tastey "karhi" (curry made of buttermilk; a sour dish with "pakora"(spicy dumplings) made of gram flour in it.

That was a neighborhood community/mohallah of about 25 houses and all were more than neighbours. They knew each other very well and shared their grief and sorrow.

All children (boys and girls) used to come out and play at sunset for an hour or two. Parents were watching, exchanging greetings and and discussing general topics with each other. "my boy friend" "my girl friend" were not phrased by then. Now these words are chasing boys and girls to try them. There is no limit in page and numbere of friendships.

You are encouraged to correct me wherever you feel I need it. Thanks.

We migrated in August 1947 from Jalandhar (India) to Lahore (Pakistan)
My father could not come because someone killer of the humanity, killed him and robbed all the cash and jewelery he had on him because he was the eldest and it was thought safe to put everything in his custody. A day before heavy rains fell and all clothings dresses were soaked. He lit a fire to sit around in cold to warm up and also to dry the paper currency. Someone watched and decided to kill him. To him it was a lotto and to us it was the blackday. But God is the Provider and He walked us along the path He picked up Best for us. My salam to those relative who loved and helped us in these circumstances.

May God keep my father and mother; and all my relatives in peace. (Ameen).

Then my mother Hussain Bibi daughter of Badruddin whose photograph is here, knew stiching and did this for money; helped in the household and children education. Great job.

Partition of India - Bitter & Painful

Partition of India in 1947 was Bitter Painful Partition

Pakistan was created out of India August 14, 1947. Muslims (whoever wanted) from new Indian territory moved to Pakistan and from non-muslims from new Pakistan territory moved to India. This created a chao, killing, robery and forced sex. Innumerable number of people suffered with loss of belongings, lives and hunger and barefooted journey; children killed unto parents and parents killed leaving children in orphanage, wives widowers, dauthers without protection, sons who were dreamed to become?? were forced to work and support family.

Jalandhar:
During partition migration process people moved to a refugee camp in Jalandhar Cantonment.
My father who had all the savings and jewlery with him, for safety, gone to attend call of nature
and fresh up for prayer at sunset time, but never came back. Was killed by someone who knew of a treasure with him. Search and announcements were made to no avail. Finally we landed in Pakistan and moved to the house of brotherinlaw of my father; M. Islam in Chauburgi Quarters, Lahore. While everybody had limited-to-family resources, family of my father's sister Zainab Mohammad Islam, provided us shelter and food in their home. Uncle Islam was office supperintendent in Public Works Department.

Someone helped us find a domestic workshop run by Begum Fatima (most probably she was MPA and had a hostel run for students) in Inder Nagar, Multan Road, Lahore,
producing sheets and blanlkets for refugrees. My mother knew stiching and got a job there and Begum Fatima helped us occupy a portion of a house in Inder Street. May Allah bless her.

Maternal and paternal uncles also helped us a lot. Their children mixed up with us and made us feel comfortable.

My mother who knew sewing/stitching used her skills to earn for kitchen and children education, without which it could have been very very hard. May God reward them all (Aameen).

I took admission in Islamia High School, Sant Nagar, Lahore to do my high school and got through it in 1949. I attended morning and evening classes and during time in between I came back home and used to help mother in shopping grocery.

Soon after with the help of a relative Sheikh Sardar Mohammad, I got a job in local office of Thal Development Authority in Lahore. Sheikh Sardar Mohammad was Office Superintendent there and so the employees took me a "sheikh", called me Sheikh Sarwar. Here all employees helped me in picking up office work. I was supervised by Mr. Naqvi a very helpful person. Thanks God, we were all praying regularly in the vicinity.

I was transferred to the site office in Shahpur Sadar, and then to Jauharabad - in Thal (desert)where development work was being carried out under the chairmanship and administration of Zafarul Ahsan.

Malik Abdul Hamid Khan a business man in Lahore (Pak Industrial & Trading Corporation, offered me to work in their office at Lahore. I joined them in 1952 and I came back to my family.
